Batteries, motors and chips — all made in-house
Founded in 2003 · Headquarters: Shenzhen
BYD started out making phone batteries and entered the car business in 2003. Today it builds its own batteries, electric motors, power electronics and semiconductors — which is why its cars undercut rivals at the same spec.
The range splits into two lines: fully electric Dolphin, Seal and Han, and DM-i hybrids such as the Song Plus, which cover up to a hundred kilometres on electricity and behave like a frugal petrol car on long trips.
Lithium iron phosphate cells shaped as long blades: strong resistance to overheating and a long service life.
The battery is part of the body, and motor, inverter and gearbox share one unit — more room inside.
The electric motor drives the car most of the time; the petrol engine mostly works as a generator.
